haven’t ever helped with this event it is time to pull on your rubber
boots and volunteer with some friends or your family. It is fun.
Contact Courtney at her email address below to volunteer. ~ Patty

Hi Patty,

I’m writing to let you know about this year’s West Fork Cleanup on May
25th. The event will take place from 8-1 pm, and the meeting place for
the cleanup is the Riverside Park in downtown West Fork. Teams will
go out to sites all along the West Fork of the White River from 8-11
am, and then lunch will be served and prizes given out from 11-1 pm.
If you could pass on this information to your Active Citizen’s list
network, I would really appreciate it! We could always use more
volunteers to maximize our cleanup efforts!

Also, I’m still looking for 1-2 site leaders, so let me know if you’re
interested in being a site leader for this year’s event, and I’ll put
you down!

Thank you,

Shirley Ann Stowe-Rains has lived in West Fork since 1977. She and her husband George have been together for 61 years. In telling her story, Shirley says, “We came here to Arkansas in ‘68.” Shirley is “in the know” about West Fork and the surrounding areas because she has been in the real estate business for many years and enjoyed meeting and getting to know people all across Northwest Arkansas.

Where does she spend her time:
Shirley enjoyed That Place and felt disappointed when it closed. She also enjoys Jake’s and West Fork Cafe and is looking forward to the opening of the new Harps, Subway, and gas station in West Fork.

She is blessed with a large family that lives in Northwest Arkansas. She has 6 great grandchildren, 3 grandchildren, and she and her husband raised 3 children of their own, Georgie, Doug, and Sharene. Shirley’s life has not been without struggles. She and George lost Doug when he was just in his 20s.

Shirley recently visited the Crystal Bridges museum. She loved the art and is eager to return and see more of the grounds there. She firmly believes the museum will continue to bring the local area together.

She has sold houses and properties in West Fork and all over the area, including Fayetteville, Farmington, Bentonville, Rogers, and Bella Vista to name a few. Sometimes she’s involved in the River Valley area real estate to best serve her clients. She first began a real estate career in 1978, but has done office work, retail, and even been a manager of four retail divisions. Shirley returned to real estate employment in 1984. She has been actively involved in real estate since then and worked for Lindsey since 1987.

She’s seen many changes in Northwest Arkansas as a whole, and specifically West Fork over her time here. She says, “540 made this area,” and it continues to grow with new stores coming in to West Fork. She loves “small towns” and believes they are an important part of the larger community in this area. “I enjoy real estate,” she says. “I don’t ever stop.” Shirley is energetic and has an interest in nutrition as it relates to good health and longevity. She actively supports West Fork businesses.

Syris Norelli, from Elkins, a student at Haas Hall Academy and Thomas Chism, from West Fork, who will be a ninth grader at West Fork High School, attended the free summer design camp at the Fay Jones School of Architecture for four days in July, learning about architecture, landscape architecture and interior design. University of Arkansas design faculty taught using hands-on projects, tours, movies and discussions.

The design faculty worked closely with local schools to recruit a diverse group of students who will be entering the ninth grade and are interested in design professions.

Students developed their design abilities through sketching exercises and also worked to create a garden project where they designed their very own “hideaway” from concept to completion. Students also had the opportunity to learn about former architecture professor and Arkansas native Fay Jones through the documentary Sacred Spaces and a tour of the Jones family home. The house tour provided insight into the unique design style for which Jones is known.
